An addition sentence can be written horizontally or vertically as shown below: 
Commutative Property
The commutative property tells us that changing the order of the addends in an addition sentence does not change the sum. 
Adding Single and Double-Digit  Addends
Example 1: Add two single-digit addends. 
Example 2: Add a double-digit and a single-digit addend.  Add one column at a time beginning with the ones column. Click on the Extra Study Help link shown above for
help with place value. 
The sum is 12.
The sum is 43.
Example 3: Add two double-digit addends.  Again, add one column at a time. 
The sum is 33.
